There have been many things heard (mainly through the grape-vine and various sci-fi forums) about the upcoming 11th Star Trek film. A large amount of this hearsay is simply rumour that will soon be extinguished.

J.J Abrams

It has been confirmed that the man behind Alias, Lost and Mission Impossible: 3 will be producing the new Star Trek film. In addition to producing the film, Abrams will also be directing it. This was decided after Abrams read the first draft. Damon Lindelof will also be producing the film.

The Writers

The upcoming Star Trek film is to be written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who have already written the screenplay.

Production Crew

Part of the production crew is said to include Scott Chambliss as production designer and Daniel Mindel as director of photography, who worked with Kurtzman, Orci and Abrams on Alias and “Mission: Impossible III.” Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Bryan Burk are to be the executive producers.

Paramount

Like the rest of the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek XI will produces by Paramount pictures. Paramount did not reject the story as some rumours have stated.

The Title

Until it’s release the film will simply be referred to as Star Trek XI. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have stated that they plan the have the title Star Trek’ as the name of the film. It is not confirmed that this will actually be the title.

Rick Berman

Although Berman has been rumoured to be working with Abrams on Star Trek XI. Berman is not involved in the production of Star Trek XI.

The Release Date

Star Trek XI is to be released on Christmas Day 2008 and filming will begin this Autumn.

The Story

The story, as the rumours have stated, is to be focusing on the lives of James T. Kirk and Spock during their time at Starfleet Academy. It documents when they first met and their first mission. The film IS to be a prequel.

Kirk and Spock

Possible one of the largest rumours started in relation to the film. Matt Damon will not be playing Captain Kirk. Tom Cruise will not be playing Spock.

The Shatner

J.J. Abrams has spoken with William Shatner and Shatner was told that he would not be reprising his role as Captain James T. Kirk. After the interview William Shatner stated, “I was here for the creation of Star Trek, shame I couldn’t be in its rebirth.”
